"mornings on 2" starts now. well, good morning. i'm dave clark. >> i'm tori campbell. it's monday, january 7th. breaking news in the east bay. we're learning what caused -- what looked like a lot of smoke in the berkeley area, turns out it was just a steampipe that burst at a factory. let's go to sal. >> we got a lot of calls in the newsroom. we turned the camera to it. we can show you this picture now. it's just a bunch of team coming from a factory.

we have different parts of the steam coming from a broken steampipe or it may be normal operations. but people saw this and said there is a fire in berkeley. well, we called the berkeley fire department. they are not working any fire and they assured us this is just steam. that's good news. as we look at the steam coming up, now that it will be light, i don't think people will be freaking out quite as much as they were. at least one gentleman thought it was pretty ominous to see that smoke. it's just steam. right now traffic is not affected in this area in berkeley, east of interstate 80. back to you. >> thank you, sal. the family of a san francisco woman who was set on fire is pleading for the suspect to turn himself in. ktvu's alex savidge is in san francisco with what sparked the violence and who police are searching for this morning. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning.

relatives say this was a heated argument over laundry that apparently prompted this attack yesterday. this man accused of setting his girlfriend on fire is still on the loose this morning and police are hunting for him. in the meantime, the victim in this case, a mother of 3, remains hospitalized with burns to her face and her chest. relatives tell ktvu she's 25- year-old star lamarr. she's now being streeted at saint francis hospital burn -- treated at saint francis burns center. her injuries are life- threatening. they are trying to track down dexter oliver, her boyfriend. he's accused of dousing her on gasoline and setting her on fire in the middle of the street. this attack happened yesterday around noon near hollister and jennings street in the bayview district. police say oliver used gas from one of the canisters at the couple's home. victim's says this fight began at a nearby laundromat. they disagreed about whether to leave their clothes there.

>> i want to know why he did that to my sister. she didn't deserve it and that he should turn himself in and that my sister is gonna make a full recovery because she's strong and i know she is strong. she's been through so much. >> reporter: the woman's relatives are hopeful she will make a full recovery after her severe p -- burn injuries. according to a san francisco police officer, no arrests have been announced in this case, meaning dexter oliver remains on the run this morning. investigators say oliver has a unique hairstyle. he has a fish design on one side of his head and then a lightning bolt on the other side of his head. san francisco police want you to be on the lookout for him. if you spot him, obviously put in the call to san francisco police. live in san francisco, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, alex. the san francisco sheriff's deputy accused of robbing a bank is due back in court in about two hours. a judge will review the felony charges against 36-year-old

phillip chung tong. prosecutors say he robbed a bank in the city's outer richmond district in november. court documents show he filed for bankruptcy four months earlier. oakland city officials hope that new plans to bring in a prominent former los angeles police chief will improve and reshape the police force. it's an expensive move. the department is paying former l.a.p.d. william brat on it $250,000 a year -- bratton $250,000 a year beginning next month. that is on top of the $100,000 the city of paying an associate of bratton. this goes before the city council for approval. three new city council members will be sworn in today. their goal is to get more police officers hired to help with understaffing at the department. new members include noel gy, dan cal be and lin net gibson

-- lynnette gibson. three hours from now, president obama will nominate former republican senator chuck hagel as defense secretary. coming up at 7:15, why members of hagel's own party say they are against his nomination. at the same white house event this morning, president obama will nominate john brennan as the new cia director. he's currently the counterterrorism and homeland security adviser. he's also a 25-year cia veteran. president obama considered nominating brennan for the job four years but brennan withdrew his name after being criticized during the bush administration. 49ers fans are ready. in a couple of hours tickets go on sale for saturday's big playoff games against the green bay packers. but knows tickets will not be easy to get. ryan flores is live in san

francisco. any idea how many tickets are up for grabs, ryan? >> reporter: very few, dave. very few. that's the latest we're hearing from the team. if you are a 49ers' fan you are probably hoping this week goes by fast because you are looking forward to the game and it was messed to be an -- it's expected to be an amazing game and aaron rodgers is coming back. colin kaepernick. tickets, yes, they will be hard to come by. the team announced that a very limited amount of tickets will be available at 10:00 a.m. this morning. if you are hoping to get those tickets, you know, make sure you have a strong internet connection or a good phone line because the only way you will be able to get the tickets is through ticketmaster. if ticketmaster doesn't work out, the team suggests searching the nfl ticket exchange. you can try other ticket websites or craigslist but you run the risk of getting counterfeits there. keep in mind, only 1,000 tickets were available for

around there. higher clouds coming in. a beautiful sunrise. but the higher clouds are all we'll see out of this system mainly staying to the north. there's thick fog being reported in the bay. morning fog, higher clouds. a little warmer tomorrow. it's a dry forecast and then on wednesday into thursday turning colder, much colder thursday,/friday as we get a stronger system coming in. we'll have a lot of cold air coming in thursday/friday. the recent rain has moved off into southern california. and then out of the area. but the overnight temperatures and the dew point coming together and that gives us thick fog. that will be with us today and tonight. these higher clouds, coming down around the southern edge of the system which has been spilling over. so we get the higher clouds. patchy, thick fog in the morning. 30s and 40s. higher clouds in the afternoon. 54 to 62. most locations, 30ss, 40s. novato is sweeping in. i did see a 39 there. fairview is 34, 34 livermore.

investors from china are boosting the bay area housing -- housing market. a growing number of chinese investors are buying homes here in the bay area. one of the reasons could be because housing prices in china appear to have peaked. that's encouraging people to sell and buy new homes. according to data quick, foreign investors are helping to push bay area home prices up. 14 major banks have reached a settlement stems fromle housing crisis. the -- from the housing crisis. the banks are expected to pay $10 million to settle wrongful foreclosure claims. almost $4 million go to the people who were foreclosed on. $6million would go to people in danger of losing their homes after falling behind on monthly payments. a scottish photographer came face to face with a polar bear and lived to tell about it. gordon buchanan was inside a safety pod but for nearly 45 minutes, as you can see, buchanan sat in the pod as the

about that deadly weekend shooting in aurora, colorado where a gunman took his family hostage and then shot and killed them. police now say the wife of the gunman was able to escape the massacre by jumping out a second-story window and then called 911. police say the gunman killed three of his relatives. archuleta was later killed by a police after a six-hour standoff. it's still not clear why he went on the shooting rampage. that deadly shooting in aurora took place a few miles from the scene of last summer's movie theater massacre. the accused gunman in that shooting is due in court at this hour. we'll have a live report from colorado -- coming up at 7:35. time is now, 7:17. well, this morning, at 10:00, hour time, president obama will announce he's nominating former republican senator chuck hagel as secretary of defense. as kyla campbell reports from our washington, d.c. newsroom, the republican party doesn't even like that.

kyle law -- kyla? >> reporter: chuck hagel is not getting support. the republican served in congress from 1968 to 2009. during that time, he was run one of the few republicans who spoke out about how then- president george w. bush was handling the war. that's why some are not supporting him. and then some republicans and democrats don't think he will offer enough support to israel. mitch mcconnell has -- has not said if he sports him as secretary of defense. >> do his views make sense for that particular job? i think he ought to be given a fair hearing like any other nominee and he will be. >> reporter: president obama will be speaking in a few hours. we expect to learn more then about his nomination for secretary of defense. kyla campbell, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:18. new this morning, interviews with a dozen female soldiers

and marines show very little interest in signing up for combat duty. most of the women surveyed said they had no interest on being on the front line fighting. they did think it should be open up to female troops who might want that experience. some women have complained that banning then from combat means they are at a disadvantage when it comes to moving up in the ranks of the military. landfill caumakers get -- california lawmakers get back to work today with a democratic super-authority in the house. does this mean it will be anything but usual in this legislation station. >> reporter: well, democrats have a lot of power. that's the first one they've had one since 18 -- since 1883. they can pass anything they want without a single republican vote. the democrats can push through without requiring republicans' support. darrell steinberg said at the top of the agenda are a water

bond, gun control, implementing the new federal healthcare plan and education funding. now, this also means that they can even override a veto of their own democratic governor. republicans said their role will to be hold democrats accountal for their decision. stein berg said they will -- steinberg said they will continue to listen to republican ideas. >> it will be up to the republicans to decide how they want to governp. because in the past, i -- govern. because in the past, i don't think it's unfair to say that they have obstructioned, especially when -- obstructed, especially when it comes to a reasonable balance between living within your means but also having the revenue necessary to fund education necessary. >> reporter: and with this super majority, democrats hope to have a budget passed on

time. one thing we asked them about was the repeal of proposition 8 depending upon the decision made by the supreme court and steinberg said he wouldn't pull putting that before voters depending upon what happens with the supreme court. one thing that comes with the super majority is whatever decisions you make you own and that's when republicans today will be holding democrats accountable for those decisions because, again, it will be up to them with this super majority. brian hickey, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, brian. 7:20. a new service is behe -- is being created by a san francisco man who lets you share pets. it's a nonprofit organization where dog owners can meet online. the service lets you trade walking, feeding and dog sitting duties. he says it's a chance for people who don't have dogs to share someone else's. more than 480 people have signed up for the service in san francisco. there's fog out there covering parts of the bay area. look at downtown san jose right

-- almadon road. he was sitting in his car when another vehicle pulled up. officers say the person in the vehicle, broke the victim's window an stabbed him twice. several people in the neighborhood heard the breaks glass. one of the victim's friends ran up right after it happened. >> he was just like trying to -- he was screaming. he was crying. he was asking god why? why right now? >> reporter: the man was rushed to the hospital where he is suffering from nonlife- threatening injuries. officers spent time gathering evidence and talking to witnesses to see if they can get -- if they could get a good description of the suspects. police tell us they believe that there is -- this is gang- related. and we spoke to one of the victims -- victim's friends who said before the car pulled up they asked if those men were in

a game they said no, they were not gang members but they were still hassled and attacked by two men. you can see the beer bottles. one of the friends who said his friend was attack repeated that. janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. the suspect in the colorado movie theater massacre is due back in court at this hour for the start of the week-long preliminary hearing. prosecutors will outline their case against james holmes. this is the first public disclosure of their evidence. our reporter is live from aurora, colorado. this evidence is expected to be pretty disturbing, right? >> reporter: that's right, tori. and family members of the victims as well as some of the victims themselves are expected to be in the court today behind me and they have already been warned that some of what will be presented will likely be very difficult for them to hear

and to see for instance, there is the possibility that part of the presentation will be some of the 911 calls made from inside the theater, the night of july 20th. in addition to that, there are videos, we understand, that were taken inside the movie theater. what will be different about this preliminary hearing, tori, is that the defense team has indicated it plans to bring a couple of witnesses and put them on the stand. that's a depoor chur from what we -- departure from what we usually see. legal observers here say this is probably the first big step, the first indication that the defense team is going to seek an insanity defense and the expectation is she witnesses will start to talk about erratic behavior, odd behavior by james holmes. now, you mentioned this is a very important hearing. the judge, in fact, has set aside the entire week also very different. usually preliminary hearings last -- last less than an hour.

he's also held over the largest courtroom available to him in the courthouse. in addition to that, there are two overflow crooms as well. there is a -- courtrooms as well. there's also a tremendous amount of security here at the arapahoe county justice center. there are snipers that they have on the rooftops in addition to security on the ground. this entire situation has been very intense from the beginning, including all of the coverage from this very important preliminary hearing. i should also mention that there's also the possibility that at any moment there could be a plea agreement because the defense team for holmes, the number one job is to save the life of their -- of their client because colorado is a death penalty state. >> is there an increase in security because of the deadly shooting over the weekend in colorado? >> reporter: the increased came

from the shooting on july 20th. we've seen a lot of security here since james holmes entered the center. we did have a hostage situation over the weekend. but the additional security here, that came with the arrival of james holmes. >> thank you. 7:34. tougher security at vallejo schools to prevent copper thefts. several portable high schools at vallejo high school were hit by copper thieves christmas day. one official told" the vallejo times ." they set up a string operation expecting the thief to come back and finish the job. the suspect did come back the next day and was arrested after a security guard saw him and called police. by the by, silent alarms have been in -- by the way, silent alarms have been installed. the city wants to raise speed limits on dozens of city streets to reduce traffic jams.

many speed limits to go up by 5 to 10 miles an hour. about 50 traffic signs would be changed at a price of $5,000. tomorrow night at san ramon city hall there will be a hearing on this. unlicensed drivers are almost three times more likely to cause a deadly car crash. the study examined 23 years of information. is found that unlicensed drivers between the ages of 20 and 29 had the most deadly crashes. the study also found that drivers with either suspended or revoked licenses contributed to a high number of crashes that ended in death. 7:36. want to check in with sal. see what's mapping at the bay bridge toll plaza. it's crowded there. i remember last week by this time, all of the backup was gone. not so this week as more people are back to work and back to school. it's backed up to the macarthur maze. not moving all that well. i'm looking at the chp to make

people in the 1980s and '90s. 7:46. we now know the name of a man who was hit and killed last night on interstate 880 in oakland. the man's been identified as 44- year-old david myorga of san leandro. the chp says he crashed into the center divide near the high street exit around 7:45 last night. he then got out of his car and tried to run across four lanes of traffic. but he was hit by two cars and killed. the chp says the drivers who hit him stopped and tried to help. the cause of the original crash is being investigated. a 22-year-old man was killed after a crash in san jose. police say the driver veered off the side of the road early yesterday morning. the car hit two light poles and flipped over. investigators don't believe the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. an oakland woman reported missing friday morning has been

found safe. just before 10:30 last night, oakland police toll us that 63- year-old gloria gee had been found. no other details have been released. her husband reported her missing friday morning after she failed to show up for work. a stretch of san francisco's market street may soon become a tax break zone. many developers at ail -- are applying for tax breaks for twitter and other high-tech companies in the area that surround market and 10th. the developers have the support of mayor lee who recently toured the twitter building. mayor lee believes a tax break is essential to revitalizing the area. a man challenging a carpool ticket heads to traffic court today in marin county with a very unusual defense. jonathan freeman was ticketed three months ago for driving in a carpool lane alone. but he plans to argue he was not alone because he had incorporation papers inside of his car.

he says california's vehicle code views corporations as people. he should 23409 have received a ticket -- he should not have received a ticket and he said she's fed up with the corporate person laws and if necessary, he's willing to take this place all the way to the supreme court. if you are planning to drive to travis air force base in fairfield this week expect big traffic delays. the westbound interstate 80 offramp on to air base parkway will be closed from 8:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. all week for maintenance work. the drivers are being told to keep heading west to the travis boulevard exit instead. kyle transplans to post detour signs and is urging people to allow more time to get to the base. any california driver has the chance to have a piece of the past on their vehicle. the dmv has started accepting free orders for legacy license plates. they are offering the old yellow plates with black lettering, black plates with

damaged. back here at home, two men are due in a bay area court today. they are charged in connection with the deadly shootings of two teenaged girls in oakland. the 18-year-old and 19-year-old are expected to enter pleas. investigators say powell shot and killed 15-year-old raquel and 16-year-old bobbi back in november. edwards is being charged as an accessory to murder. a juvenile was arrested in the case. investigators still haven't told us about a possible motive but they say the suspects did know the victims. and a hearing will be held today on whether the man charged with killing 7 people at oikos university is mentally fit to stand trial. a court-appointed psychiatrist is expected to present his court on wun goes goe. one psychiatrist said he was not fit to stand trial.

good morning. welcome back to "mornings on 2." i'm tori campbell. >> good morning. i'm dave clark. it's monday, it's january 7th. well, a young san francisco mother is in the hospital this morning with life-threatening injuries after she was set on fire. ktvu's alex savage is in san francisco now to tell us who police are saying did this and also the search underway to catch him. alex? >> reporter: good morning. this woman is being treated this morning at saint francis hospital with severe borns to her face and chest. at the same time, san francisco police are still searching for the woman's boyfriend accused of setting her on fire following an argument. police right now trying to

track down this man, 22-year- old dexter oliver. he's accused of dousing the woman in gasoline and then setting her on fire. the attack happened yesterday, just about noon near hollister avenue and jennings street in the bayview district. the victim in this case is a mother of three hospitalized with what police are describing as life-threatening injuries. relatives tell ktvu she's 25- year-old star lamarr. the victim's sister told us this fight began at a nearby laundromat yesterday. the couple disagreed about whether to leave their clothes there. >> they argue and stuff all of the time but i didn't think it would go this far because couples argue all of the time but i didn't know it was gonna go this far. >> reporter: following the fight at the laundromat, relatives say oliver went back home and got gas from one of the canisters the couple had at their home. he poured the gas onto his girlfriend and let her on fire according to police. the woman's relatives are hopeful she can make a recovery

from those serious injuries she suffered yesterday. according to a san francisco police officer i talked with this morning, there have been no arrests a -- announced in this case. ollie remains upon the run. he has a unique haircut. there is a fish design on one side of his head and a lightning bolt on the other side. if you do see him, san francisco police would like to hear from you. live this morning in san francisco, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, alex. 7:59. the cause of a garage fire in san jose is now under investigation. the fire started in the garage on loomis drive around 6:30 and then spread to the home causing major damage. a 19-year-old inside the home woke up to the sound of smoke detectors and the smell of smoke. everyone escaped safely. firefighters could not even go into the garage fearing the roof would collapse. so they stayed on scene for hours watching for hot spots. this morning, the investigation

continues into a huge weekend fire at a school bus yard in fresno. the fire caused an estimated $1 million in damage to buses used to carry special education students to class. the fire gutted 16 buses and badly damaged six others yesterday morning. investigators are still searching for the cause but any say early signs indicate the fire was an accident and not arson. 8:00. secretary of state hillary clinton went back to work this morning after being hospitalized with a blood clot in her brain. this is new video of hillary clinton right there leaving her home this morning in washington, d.c. she got out of the hospital last wednesday after being@midded -- admitted -- after being admitted after doctors found the clot. her first week back at work will be busy. she will be taking part in events surrounding a mid karzai's visit to washington on

friday. starting tomorrow, san francisco school lunches will have healthier options. oakland revolution foods has won a contract to supply those meals. all of the meals are cooked every day from local ingredients and no high- fructose corn syrup is used and nothing is fried or frozen. the meals will cost a little bit more, about 16 cents more than the old meals. nhl team owners are expected to meet on wednesday to vote on the new labor agreement that will end the 113- day lockout. the deal still has to be ratified. early sunday morning, the league announced that after a 16-hour negotiating session an agreement has been reached. >> we're anxious to get back and get back to our normal course of business and normal course of life and get back in action. >> the nhl says january 19th is

you have an update on the car/pedestrian accident. >> that's right. this happened in the castro area. an elderly woman was hit by a vehicle in this intersection of mission. chp patrols the area and did quite a lengthy investigation. the woman was taken to the hospital. she is expected to survive but her injuries were rather serious. the chp did wrap up their investigation a few hours back and east leweling and mission has opened back up for traffic. let's go to the bay bridge toll plaza. the traffic has improved quite a bit. there is a little bit of a backup. it's still more than it was last week. but we see some improvement by 9:00. it might be a nice drive for you then. san mateo bridge. a lot of fog, steve has been talking about the fog. the camera is fogged in. the signs are warning of fog. be careful there.

convicted felons to buy ammunition. but right now, there's no way to enforce it. one provision of her bill would require ammunition buyers to provide identification. it is 8:14. in less than two hours, president obama will formally announce his nomination for secretary of defense. as ktvu's kyla campbell tells us, the nominee is already getting resistance from the left and the right. kyla? >> reporter: former nebraska senator chuck hagel is being called a man without a party. that's something americans might like but it may not fly here in d.c. hagel earned two purple hearts in the vietnam war and was a successful businessman before he served in congress from 1996 to 2009. hagel is one of the few republicans who spoke out about the way then-president george w. bush handled the iraq war and that's why some gop members are not supporting his nomination. on top of that, some republicans and democrats are worried hagel would not provide

to put up a fence along the border that israel shares with syria. he says he's concerned about the country's space. israel has already north fid six miles of the -- fortified six miles of the border between the two countries. expect a big celebration pat min net fa san jose international airport this friday. that's when nipon airways is expected to fly the dreamliner between san jose and tokyo. it's designed to make longer flights comfortable with bigger windows and more storage space. the airline will have five flights every week from san jose. airline industry analysts say there could be fewer experienced pilots flying. they are forecasting a possible

shortage because so many pilots are reaching the mandatory age. it's now harder for younger pilots to get into the cockpit for new rules requiring them to have more experience before they can even become a copilot. no arrests after the shooting of a 16-year-old girl in millbrae. police say the girl was with a group of friends when she was shot across the street from cappuccino hospital. the federal is in stable condition. police -- the girl is in stable condition. police have not stayed what pled up to the shooting. police are still searching for suspects in san jose in the city's first homicide in 2013. a man's body was found yesterday morning outside a home on tripoli avenue. the deadly shooting occurred late saturday night. but officers who searched the area with flashlights could not immediately find the victim apparently due to darkness and pouring rain. neighbors heard a heated argument and then gunshots. >> i was terrified. i have some daughter, too, we

don't know what happened. >> a couple of houses away. it's ridiculous. i never thought that would happen right there. they are a real quiet family. absolutely no reason why i would think that would ever happen. >> neighbors say they heard a car speeding away from the scene shortly after the gunfire. at this point, there's no suspect information or any word of a suspect motive. 8:18. the 2013 consumer electronics show doesn't start until tomorrow but we're getting inside information on what will be showcased in las vegas. toyota and audi are expected to show off their new driverless cars. now, toyota has a modified lexus ls-600-h high bride. it uses -- hybrid. it uses technology to avoid other cars on the road and safely get around traffic lights and lane markers. audi is not give giving any details on its car, at least

investigators in san jose are trying to figure out what led up to a deadly accident where a woman lost control of her car and crashed into a pond. it happened yesterday afternoon on the alma done expressway.

the witnesses say the driver sped through the red light, hit a curb and went into the water. it took drivers more than 40 -- divers more than 40 minutes to find the woman. by the time they got to her, it was too late. >> one of our firefighters tried to swim out there, check the vehicle. he said there was zero visibility, he said he was able to touch the car but that's all he was able to do. >> they will now look at the car for mechanical problems and also they will look into the possibility of whether the woman experienced a medical emergency. a former facebook executive applied for a liquor license to reopen a barlowcated on el camino -- bar located on el camino real. the deal recently fell apart. british bankers club closed last year after several violent

incidents occurred there. sal is back, you are watching the toll plaza, the roads and everything else. what's going on out there? >> well, we have a little bit of improving conditions out there which is nice to be able to report at the toll plaza, for example, it took longer today but it is backed up only a little way here. it's backed up for maybe a five- minute delay, the metering lights are on. no problems getting into san francisco. 880 northbound and southbound near the oakland coliseum. hitting slowness here as you drive north toward high street. and the commute in contra costa county, that's busy. we've had some of the earlier problems go away. as we tilt down to hayward, we have slow traffic heading fremont. let's go to steve. a lot of fog around. a little easterly breeze as well. many locations have brought that fog right back in the valley and a pretty good band of higher clouds. it's a mostly cloudy morning. 30s on the temperatures.

30s, right at 40. oakland is 40. san francisco 45. but 39 p san jose -- a lot of fog by san jose. i know mountain view. but an easterly breeze, santa rosa, concord, oakland. could pick up a little bit coming off maybe right above the caldy caught on the oakland/berkeley side. foggy, cold, high clouds. there is a back edge to this coming into mendocino county. partly sunny this afternoon. storm track is staying to the north but therein lies -- it's a dry pattern but we'll see a huge change on thursday. everything is still on tap for some very cold air to come in. if there's any moisture, the snow level could get down to 2,000 feet late thursday into friday. we'll see. 50s today. mainly on the temperatures. it will be warmer tuesday. we'll start to see the system inch back in. no doubt about it. much, much colder and windy on friday. time now is 8:27.

overnight in san jose, a man was stabbed as he sat in his car. ktvu's janine de la vega has been on the scene since 4:30

this morning. you talked to someone who said he saw the attack. janine? >> reporter: yeah. i spoke to the victim's friend. he says he was attacked as well. this all happened in front of this apartment complex near blossom hill road and almaden. he said his friends were drinking on the corner and two men asked if he was in a gang. you can see the broken glass left from the attack that followed. police say around 12:40 this morning, a 21-year-old man was sitting in his car near the apartment on via montae drive when another vehicle pulled up. officers say the person in the vehicle broke the person's window and stabbed him twice. several people in the neighborhood heard all of the breaking glass. the victim's friends said he was hit on the shoulder and describes what happened to his friend next. >> what he did was throw his weapon at the window and broke the glass. he grabbed it once again and threw it again and that's when my friend -- he tried to cover

himself protect him self. but it was a [bleep] sharp blade cutting him up. >> reporter: the victim is in the hospital. officers are talking to witnesses to see if they can get a good description of the possible suspect and the car they may have left in. they do tell us they believe this is gang-related. but again, the victim's friend that we spoke to says that his friend is not -- a gang member. they were having fun out here drinking and minding their own business. so far no arrests in this case. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. in 30 minutes from root now r the san francisco sheriff's deputy accused of robbing a bank is due back in court. felony charges against the 36- year-old will be revealed bu a

school board, lynnette gibson who was pan affordable housing advocate. california lawmakers get back to work today in sacramento with a democratic supermajority in both houses. the session started last month as the new legislature was sworn in but they recessed for the holidays. since the democrats have the two-thirds majority in both houses, they can pass legislation including new taxes without any republican votes. eliot spitzer is ending his tv show on current tv now that the cable channel has been sold to al-jazeera. spencer said he had a wonderful time doing the show but his relationship was with al gore, not al-jazeera. al-jazeera announced last week it bought current tv for $500 million. they now plan to use the channel to focus on international news. lieutenant-governor gavin newsom is giving up the show he's been doing on current tv as well. the state has given the

green light to install a special red light camera at a san francisco intersection. tara moriarty is live at market and octavio. >> reporter: good morning. this is the bike lane. you can see the bikers coming down the hill. they come to this spot right here where octavia crossing. it is sort of a dangerous intersection because a lot of cars try to turn right here when any are not supposed to. also cars coming in, not supposed to attorney right unless they have an arrow. so now the city is paving the way for red light cameras to be installed here. it's not only to provent red- light runners but the turn around the corner. this is one of the most dangerous intersections in one of the entire city. pedestrians an bicyclists have been hit by motorists making

right-hand turns off market for years. >> it's a good why idea. this is a really dangerous intersection. i know a few people who have been hit. they need to slow things down and take into account the cyclists here. >> reporter: in 2011 alone there were nearly a dozen accidents at this intersection. in 2010, legislation was actually vetoed by governor arnold schwarzenegger on the grounds it was unnecessary. so amiano requested a legal opinion and it cited safety concerns and passed this over to cau ma law harris. last week, harris gave -- cau ma law harris -- kamala harris. last week harris gave the green light. live in san francisco, i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, tara. let's check in with sal. what's happening in oakland on 880. sal? >> it's getting slower there, northbound as you drive past the coliseum. you will see slow traffic here

getting up past high street. actually past 66, driving north toward high street and then you will see slow traffic continuing up to about 23rd. also this morning, we're looking at the bay bridge. that's cleared out nicely. so you had to wait a while. right now it's a good time to go into san francisco. if you are driving on the nimitz freeway heading south to fremont, you will be seeing a lot of slow traffic. the san mateo bridge, heavy nothing and -- fog and thick traffic. >> we have a lot of fog out there. there's some breaks in it. it's either very foggy. mostly cloudy here in the morning. 30s and 40s. just looking at some of the  updated forecast weather models coming in very cold air. it will arrive here thursday morning. today we have -- i mean, cold lows. 30s and 40s but a lot more fog. fog is the bigger story. a little warmer to a dry forecast and then starting on wednesday, turning cooler and much colder on thursday/friday. snow level would be around

in a crowded movie theater in denver last july. prosecutors will outline their case making it the first official public state on their evidence. a judge will decide whether to send the case to trial. we have new details about the deadly weekend shooting in aurora, colorado, where a gunman took his family hostage and then shot and killed them. police now say the wife of gunman sun -- of sonny archuleta was able to escape the massacre because she jumped out of a second-story window and then called 911. police say the gunman killed three of his relatives. archuleta was later killed by police after a six-hour standoff. it's still not clear why he went on the shooting rampage. security has been tightened at los angeles schools as a response to the deadly connecticut school shooting. today is the first day back after the winter break. police and county sheriff deputies are planning extra patrols around school district campuses. l.a.'s police chief says a police officer will make a stop

every day at the city's 600 public elementary and middle schools. 0 minutes before 9:00. tougher security is in place at vallejo schools to prevent copper theft. several portable classrooms at vallejo high were hit by copper thieves on christmas day. one school district official said they set up a sting operation, expecting the thief to come back to finish the job. the suspect did come back the next day and was arrested after a security guard spotted him and called police. silent alarms have also been installed. a new service has been created by a san francisco man that lets you share pets. eric husk created city dog share. it's a nonprofit organization where dog owners can meet online. the service lets you trade walking, feeding and dog sitting duties. hurricane says it's a chance for people who don't have dogs to share someone else's. more than 480 people have

investors will soon get a better feel for the outlook for corporate america. major u.s. companies begin to report first quarter earnings this week with alcoa. the dow is currently down 62. the nasdaq is down 6. s&p also down 6. a new report says foreign investors were china are boosting the area housing market. according to the mercury news, a growing number of chinese investors are buying homes in the bay area. one of the reasons could be because housing prices in china you a peer to have peaked which is encouraging people to sell and buy new homes.

according to data fick -- data quick, foreign investors are hoping to push the bay area prices up. ten major banks have reached a settlement stemming from the housing crisis. the banks are expected to pay $8.5 billion. the banks include bank of america, citigroup, j.p. morgan chase and wells fargo. people who were wrongfully foreclosed on between 2009 and 2010 could receive up to $125,000. an estimated 400,000 homeowners could be eligible for payments. 8:46. bell, the head of google is in north korea this morning. that's not making u.s. officials happy. ktvu's pam cook is in our newsroom right now with more details on this controversial trip. pam? >> reporter: yeah, google chairman eric schmidt arrived in north korea to get a first- hand look at the country's economy and soak media. just a couple of hours ago, he and former new mexico governor,

bill richardson stepped off the plane. sh knit is not talking on -- schmidt is not talking in camera. but bill richardson said -- >> this is a private humane dareian visit. we're here looking -- humanitarian visit. we're here looking at the humanitarian situation. we're gonna ask about the american detainee here. >> that detainee is an being detained by the government. the state department is not pleased by this visit. it comes weeks after a north korean rocket launch. now, again, google's eric schmidt has not talked about this mission in particular. but he has spoken publicly around the world about the power of connectivity of lifting people out of poverty and political oppression. only a small portion of the elite class in north korea is actually connected to the

internet. but in his new year's speech, the new leader said his goal of expanding sign science and technology will -- science an technology will improve the economy. that speech is the reason that eric schmidt is along for the trip. back to you. we have breaking news now at 8:47 a.m. we are a finding out about the fatal crash between a train and a pedestrian. this happened at about 7:45. so about an hour ago. a pedestrian was walking his bike along the tracks and was hit and killed by a capital corridor train. police are doing an investigation here. and the trains are still getting by but they -- but they are using an alternate track. this will delay the capital corridor trains that move through here. again, an investigation, these are live pictures from newschopper2 of a fatal crash. we're getting reports that this man who was described as an adult male in his 20s or 30s

sparked this attack and more about the manhunt. >> reporter: injust talked to a -- i just talked a few minutes ago to the san francisco police. they are still searching for that man accused of setting his girlfriend on fire yesterday following an argument. this morning, that mother of three remains hospitalized. she has severe burns we're told hadder to -- to her chest, neck and face as well. he's being treated for what police describe as life- threatening injuries apartment saint francis hospital this morning. relatives say she's 25-year-old sara lamar. the attack happened near hollister and jennings street in the bayview district. police say the woman's boyfriend doused her with gasoline and set her on fire in the middle of the street. the woman was able to rip her burning jacket off and run back home to get help. the victim's sister said this all began at a nearby laundromat. >> my sister wanted to leave

her clothes at the laundromat but he didn't want to leave them there. she said she does it all of the time and he got mad and threw the clothes down. >> reporter: this morning police are trying to track down this man, 22-year-old dexter oliver. investigators say he has a unique haircut. there is a fish design on one side of his head and a lightning bolt on the other side. if you spot him, obviously put in that call to san francisco police. meantime, the woman's relatives do tell ktvu that this couple had their share of fights over the past six months there were waiting. but -- dating but relatives never expected anything like this. alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. nine minutes before 9:00. in a few hours, the fbi is expected to tell us if new human remains have been found near a well in san joaquin county. bones and remains were at least three people have already been found there. they are believed to be victims

8:54. we're following breaking news in san jose where a mobile pet spa crashed into a store. ktvu's janine de la vega just arrived on the scene. janine? >> reporter: we're here at 85. right behind me, you can see a tow truck is pulling out this mobile dog spa, grooming van. it's called just for paws. it has gone and completely crashed into this smoke shop here located into this strip mall i just spoke with police a short time ago and they tell me that this accident all happened at 6:30 this morning. and apparently what happened is somebody who works for the just for paws mobile spa company left this unit basically unattended, was warming it up either in a parking lot or their driveway. when they came out, they found it was stolen. next thing you know, a couple of hours later, police say that they get a call from somebody passing by saying that this van
